Millions of people all over the world are drinking wine but only few know how to recognize or distinguish its characteristics. Today, wine tasting parties are organized to bring together all wine lovers and test their expertise. It takes a lot of experience and exposure before a person can be called a wine expert. However, becoming one is surprisingly easy. Here are some tips on how to become an effective wine taster:
1.Preparing the tongue.
Obviously, the tongue plays a major role in wine tasting. It contains taste buds that are responsible in detecting if food or drinks being eaten are bitter, salty, sour, or sweet. To make them work as intended, swish wine around the mouth, this will signal the tongue to get ready in identifying the wine.
2.Preparing the sense of smell.
75% of taste is actually dictated by the sense of smell. Aside from the tongue, the nose will also play an important role in tasting a wine. Wine experts know that it isn?t a good idea when tasting a wine while having a running nose or colds because it will affect their sense of taste. In smelling the wine, it is necessary to swirl it first. This will release molecules that produce aroma.
3.Examining the wine?s appearance.
To determine color of the wine, pour it in a clear glass and use white paper or tablecloth for background. This procedure will give you an idea about the age of the wine. For example, when white wine appears whiter it means it contains more flavors and it may be vintage. On the other hand, red wines appear lighter as they age.
4.Evaluating the wine.
After following the first 3 steps, it is time to evaluate the wine. In order to do so, these questions must be answered: Is wine rich or light? Is it too harsh or too smooth? Does it have pleasant aftertaste? Is it too dry? The answers will lead the wine taster to decide if the taste is appropriate for a specific brand or type of wine.
To become an expert wine tester, you need to taste several wines. It would help to keep notes on the impression and labels of each wine. This would make the identification process easier and more accurate. Learning this skill requires a lot of time and experience. Do not be in a hurry to learn it, take time to enjoy while doing so.

What did Nehru Incarnate as?
Fri, 10 Oct 08 03:16:33 -0700
This one is really funny. And a bit sad. My friend Anup in Australia sent me the link to an article, Prabhupada And Nehru’s Incarnation, from the Prabhupada Hare Krishna News Network. The setting is in Brooklyn, New York, a few weeks after Nehru’s death in 1964. Someone asks the guru Prabhupada what he thought became of Nehru after his death. The writer of the article recounts Prabhupada’s answer. Read on. The question was a loaded one, I thought. In fact, I had the misgiving that Prabhupad
Love Herring in Sweden
Thu, 09 Oct 08 10:52:00 -0700
The Situation: You’ve just landed in the Swedish capital of Stockholm, hungry and eager to indulge in some traditional Scandinavian fare. You wander into a buffet-style restaurant and stare at a sm?rg?sbord that looks disconcertingly similar to the raw seafood section at your local grocery store. Mounds of glistening herring prepared in every imaginable fashion stare back. Where to begin? You need a herring primer. The basics: Before writing them off as oily anchovies, know that herring are
Red Hook Day Trip
Thu, 09 Oct 08 04:38:57 -0700
The Ikea shuttle and ferry may have made Red Hook easier to get to, but it still feels cut off from the city, in the best possible way. These are our favorite nooks and crannies, Google-mapped here and organized on the hour for one (or more) ambitious days. 11 AM: Get a foot-long Virginia Ham, egg, potato and mozzarella hero ($9.50) at Defonte’s (379 Columbia St., 718-625-8052, closed Sun.), touted by Edible Brooklyn as one of the best breakfast sandos in town. Dig in at Red Hook Park, just d

You can join the masses cramming into Publican on its opening night in the West Loop, or you can hit a number of events around town, ranging from an all-out flashback bash to one for the fashion conscious: THURSDAYI love it when fashion shows cater to men and women, and this one spotlights the gear from new dress shop le Dress (1741 W. Division St., 773-697-9899) and dandy-man spot haberdash (1350 N. Wells St., 312-440-1300). The Dress & Dash Fall Fashion Show at Crimson Lounge pops off the late
Floating Wino's! - Nha Trang, Vietnam

Jump to the full entry & travel map Nha Trang, Vietnam After spending another few hours on a rickety old bus on some of the bumpiest roads in the world (not exaggerating..honest!) we arrive in Nha Trang. We were on the bus with a guy called Pete (from Birmingham) who we had originally met at the Hu Chi Tunnels in Saigon, who knew a good place to stay so we all got dropped off together, checked in a made our way to the roof terrace where we spent the rest of the afternoon, along with a Swe
